Everything you need to know to draw, write, outline, doodle, color, and design projects with Cricut Pens.
Cricut Pens are one of the most underrated tools your Cricut machine offers. They allow you to draw, write, letter, outline graphics, add decorative details, and even create hand-drawn stickers and coloring pages, all with the crisp precision of a machine.
This guide explains how to install pens correctly, how to design files that use pen strokes, how to combine drawing and cutting, and how to avoid common mistakes. At the end, you’ll find tons of real project ideas that highlight the pens’ full creative potential.
SUPPLIES YOU'LL NEED
-
Cricut Maker, Explore, or Joy
-
Cricut Pens (Fine-Point, Double-Sided, Gel Pens, or Infusible Ink Pens)
-
Paper, cardstock, sticker paper, etc.
-
StandardGrip or LightGrip Mat
-
Brayer (optional but helpful)
-
Fine-Point Blade (for draw + cut projects)
STEP 1: Install Your Cricut Pens the Correct Way
Cricut Pens go into Clamp A (the left clamp).
To install properly:
-
Open Clamp A.
-
Insert the pen straight down until you hear a click.
-
Close the clamp.
Important:
If you don’t hear the click, your pen isn’t fully seated. This leads to faded lines or no writing at all.
Pen Types & When to Use Them
-
0.4 Fine-Point Pens: everyday writing, outlines, labels.
-
0.3 Extra-Fine Pens: detailed illustrations, planner stickers, fine doodles.
-
Gel Pens: vibrant, smooth coloring; darker, more saturated lines.
-
Metallic Pens: dark papers, cards, invitations.
-
Infusible Ink Pens: sublimation-style transfers (for coasters, shirts, totes).
STEP 2: Understanding “Draw” Layers in Design Space
Anything you want the Cricut to draw (not cut) must be set to:
Operation → Pen
You can convert:
-
Text
-
Shapes
-
Uploaded images
-
SVG outlines
-
Doodles and icons
Once set to “Pen,” the Cricut will draw those lines exactly as shown.
Choosing Writing Fonts
Any font labeled "Writing" in Design Space is optimized for pen use.
These produce single-line handwriting, not bubble-outline letters.
STEP 3: Add an Offset or Cut Layer
(Optional)
If you're creating stickers, tags, labels, or decorative items:
-
Select your drawn design.
-
Go to Offset and choose 0.05–0.15 inches.
-
Set the offset to Basic Cut.
This creates a perfect cut line around your drawn artwork.
STEP 4: Attach Everything So It Writes in Place
This is critical for successful pen projects.
Select all layers (draw + cut)
→ click Attach.
Attach ensures:
-
The pen draws onto the same location you're cutting
-
The machine does not rearrange your objects
-
You get a seamless draw-then-cut workflow
If you forget to attach, Cricut will move pieces around the mat and your stickers/tags will be completely misaligned.
STEP 5: Prepare and Load the Material
Use the mat appropriate for your material:
-
LightGrip (blue) → paper, sticker paper
-
StandardGrip (green) → cardstock
-
Place material in the top-left corner.
-
Smooth it with your hands or a brayer.
-
Load the mat when prompted.
STEP 6: Draw Your Design
When you hit Make It, Cricut will:
-
Draw the pen layers first.
-
Prompt you to switch pens if you used multiple colors.
-
Cut the outline or shapes afterward.
Drying Time
Give the ink 15–30 seconds to dry, especially on glossy surfaces.
For very absorbent matte papers, pens dry instantly.
STEP 7: Cut the Project (If Included)
If your project includes cutting:
-
The Cricut will automatically switch to the Fine-Point Blade after drawing.
-
Verify your material selection before pressing Go.
Kiss-cut (for stickers)
Use Washi Sheet or Sticker Paper Removable.
Full cut
Use Cardstock 80 lb or the appropriate setting.
STEP 8: Remove Your Project From the Mat
Always peel the mat away from the paper, not the paper off the mat.
This keeps your project flat and prevents curling, especially for stickers and cards.
You just completed a pen project with Cricut!
Now let’s look at what you can make with these tools.
